ChatGPT vs Claude: Which Is More Reliable? Uptime & Outage Comparison [Real-Time]

ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) are the two leading generative-AI chat services. On this page we line up their current status and uptime (our own estimate) live in the table above, then explain how their outages differ and how to switch when one of them goes down.

Uptime is our own estimate (share of operational), not official vendor figures, based on data since monitoring began.

Which has higher uptime?

The comparison table above shows each service's current status along with its 24-hour and 7-day uptime (our own estimate). These figures are the share of snapshots that were "normal" among those we have collected since we began monitoring, and they are not the official SLA values published by either company.

In general, both major providers maintain high uptime. Rather than one always being better than the other, it is more practical to think of them as "differing in when and how outages occur." Check the table above for the latest figures.

How their outages differ

ChatGPT has many components, such as Conversations, GPTs, voice mode, image generation, and search, so it is prone to "partial outages" where only a specific feature goes down. You may run into cases where chat works fine but only image generation is unstable.

Claude tends to announce outages at the model level (Opus / Sonnet / Haiku), and a notable trait is that "overloaded (529)" errors are more likely to appear when demand spikes. When only a specific model is unstable, switching to a different model can sometimes work around it.

In fact, even in our first month of monitoring (June 2026), both companies recorded several short-lived spikes in errors on individual features or individual models. Most were transient and recovered within about an hour.

Which to switch to during an outage

Claude is a strong temporary substitute when ChatGPT is having trouble, and the reverse is equally true. For many use cases, such as writing, summarizing, and coding assistance, the two are interchangeable.

Features unique to ChatGPT, like image generation and voice, cannot be replaced by Claude, so in those cases other services such as Gemini also become candidates. The fastest move is to pick whichever side shows "normal" in the table above.

FAQ

ChatGPT vs Claude: which has higher uptime?

The table at the top of this page shows the 24-hour and 7-day uptime for both (our own estimate). Because rankings shift over time, compare using the latest figures.

If ChatGPT goes down, can I still use Claude?

In most cases they run independently, so it is common for one to remain usable when the other is down. However, a demand spike can hit both companies at once, so check the status of both in the table above.
