Gemini runs on Google's large-scale infrastructure, while ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's own platform. Both keep high uptime, but their outages surface differently—so judge by the latest numbers rather than assuming one is always better.
How their outages differ
ChatGPT has many components—Conversations, GPTs, voice, image generation, search—so partial outages where only one feature fails are common. Chat may work while image generation is down.
Gemini's incidents tend to be announced on the Google Cloud side, and response errors or capacity limits can appear right after model updates or during demand spikes. Region- or account-based restrictions (age, Workspace) can also look like an "outage" to an individual user.
In our own measurements, both providers have recorded several short-lived error spikes on individual features. Most were transient and recovered within about an hour.
